Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Turkey’s foreign minister, accused the US of bad faith and delivered an ultimatum: “Our relations are at a very critical point. Either we repair our relations or [they] will be broken altogether.” But the US military has told the Turks, in effect, to get lost. In an unusually frank admission, the state department says it expects Tillerson will have a “difficult conversation” in Ankara. History suggests the row will be patched up. But Erdoğan believes he has other options if the US alliance implodes. He is increasingly cooperating with the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s main backers, Iran and Russia. This collaboration has grave implications for Turkey’s place in Nato. Russia and the US are involved in a far wider, escalating struggle for control and influence in post-Isis Syria.Just how dangerous this is was shown when a Russian Su-25 fighter jet was shot down recently by Syrian rebels using a shoulder-held Manpad missile, allegedly supplied by the US. In addition, there are unconfirmed reports that several, and maybe dozens, of Russian nationals fighting alongside Syrian government troops were killed last week in clashes with US and US-backed forces. Russians, possibly mercenaries, are also said to have died in an American airstrike near Deir Ezzor, close to the Iraqi border.Further roiling the conflict, Iran is using Syrian territory as a launchpad for exerting military pressure on Israel, Washington’s close ally, as last weekend’s unprecedented aerial clashes demonstrated. Tillerson’s Middle East pilgrimage coincides with rising anti-American sentiment. In Turkey, a Center for American Progress poll this week showed 83% of Turks view the US unfavourably, and 46% believe Erdoğan should do more to confront Washington.Hostility to Trump’s policies bedevils Tillerson’s other visits this week. In Amman, he will try to placate Jordan’s government, a longtime ally, which is angry about US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and its cut in aid to the Palestinians. In Kuwait on Tuesday, Tillerson faced the damaging consequences of Trump’s close embrace of Saudi Arabia, whose bitter dispute with Qatar – home to a vital US military base – has jeopardised western security interests and poisoned Gulf relations. Last modified on Thu 5 Jul 2018 16.46 EDT Bashar al-Assad The financial cost of the Trump-endorsed Saudi war in Yemen, plus the Iraqi leadership’s ties to Iran, have also reportedly led Riyadh to renege on billions of dollars in pledges to fund Iraqi reconstruction. None of this helps advance Tillerson’s stated aims: stabilising the region and finishing off Isis. Tillerson’s first stop – a visit to Egypt on Monday – inadvertently highlighted another controversy: Trump’s failure to maintain traditional US advocacy for democracy and human rights. Congratulating his hosts on counter-terrorism operations in Sinai, Tillerson made no mention of next month’s rigged presidential poll, when Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, whom Trump calls a “fantastic guy”, will be re-elected. All credible challengers have been disqualified or locked up. As a former high-flying Exxon-Mobil chief executive, Rex Tillerson is unaccustomed to groveling. But the US secretary of state may have no choice during a five-country mission to try and soothe tempers and repair damage across the Middle East after a year of Donald Trump shenanigans.America’s top diplomat is reaping the whirlwind of 12 months of disruptive, divisive policies and what critics say is Trump’s lack of strategic vision for a troubled region vital for western interests.Nobody is angrier than Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey’s choleric president. Erdoğan has a long list of additional grievances with his Nato ally. But it is US policy in Syria, and especially its support for the YPG Kurdish militia, that really gets his goat. Before invading the Kurdish stronghold of Afrin last month, Erdoğan told the US to get out of the way. Dry eyes and an absent A-list as the new zeitgeist jettisons Philip Green Support The Guardian Last modified on Sun 28 Oct 2018 13.25 EDT Sonia Sodha #MeToo movement Share on LinkedIn That’s not the only thing holding back the movement. In recent months, it’s become clear that people who are no allies of #MeToo are all too keen to marshal it for their own ends. We’ve seen that happening in the US, where alt-right bloggers have pledged to use it to bring down liberal opponents of Trump. And we’ve seen it here, where John Bercow’s longstanding critics have used serious (and as yet uninvestigated) allegations of bullying against him and findings that the House of Commons – of which he is chief officer – has a toxic culture of bullying and harassment to call for his resignation. In theory, there’s no problem. Who cares what’s motivating someone else? Judge each case on its merits. But it matters psychologically: the bandwagon-jumping morphs the debate so it’s no longer about what happened to the alleged victims but about something else altogether. It pushes people into ignoring the transgressions of their allies out of distaste at the prospect of lining up alongside their foes. That way lies hypocrisy. And if by any chance you think it is limited to one side – Republican senator Susan Collins casting her swing vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the supreme court after delivering an impassioned speech on why #MeToo is long overdue – think again. Two weeks ago, Hillary Clinton – she of the “I’m with her” slogan – was questioned on whether her husband should have stood down over his affair with Monica Lewinsky. No one was expecting a yes. But this self-professed feminist, the first major-party female candidate for US president, couldn’t even rouse a “no comment”. Instead she defended the indefensible, perpetuating the myth that it’s OK for the most powerful man in the world to accept oral sex from his intern in the Oval Office, because it was “consensual”.It would be unfair to single out Clinton. The Labour party – the clue’s in the name: it’s there to champion workers – has utterly failed to hold Bercow to account for his leadership of the Commons. A Labour MP, Kate Green, cast the deciding vote to block an investigation into the allegations that he subjected some of his staff to severe bullying, leaving one suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder – accusations that he denies. In a recent Commons debate about bullying and harassment in parliament, Labour MPs had the gall to accuse Bercow’s critics of bullying him. And what a great takeaway for abusers this was, from the veteran Labour campaigner Margaret Beckett. In defending Bercow’s position, she said “abuse is terrible”, but that Brexit “trumps bad behaviour”. comment Share on Twitter Read more Topics Share via Email A year on, there’s already a depressing familiarity to the #MeToo cycle. First comes the revelation. Then days of salacious headlines. Then the moment of reckoning: a powerful man either loses his job. Or he doesn’t. And on we go until it all happens again. When #MeToo first exploded, I shared the optimism about its capacity to create change: not just for the victims of the rich and famous, but also for those whose transgressions are never going to be newsworthy. Today I’m much warier. It’s undoubtedly satisfying seeing some big cheeses get their richly deserved comeuppance, but it has its limits. Sometimes a genuine expression of remorse and a promise to do better might be preferable. And the very thing that has made #MeToo impactful – its short-circuiting of the due process that has failed women for decades – was only ever going to work against a handful of predators, in part because the more revelations that emerge, the more they lose their capacity to shock. But also because exposing a few famous men for what they are is probably not the most effective way of reshaping what men can and can’t get away with in workplaces far from the media glare. ‘So long as we judge the predators we like differently, we’re all to some extent complicit.’Photograph: Wiktor Szymanowicz / Barcroft Images Sun 28 Oct 2018 10.11 EDT Share on WhatsApp Share on Facebook … we have a small favour to ask. You can’t (rightly) pooh-pooh Brett Kavanaugh for wheeling out irrelevant character witnesses (would-be rapists aren’t necessarily awful to all the women in their lives) and then proclaim: “But John Bercow’s been such a great reformer!” There isn’t some utilitarian calculus that means abuse gets outranked by other considerations. And it’s wrong to call out the hypocrisy of others without confronting your own cognitive dissonance about friends who may also be bullies and harassers. So long as we judge the predators we like differently, we’re all, to some extent, complicit. Only when people feel able to call out those they like and love will we see progress. If not, we’ll at best be stuck in a holding pattern of revelation then resignation for years to come. At worst, #MeToo will be discredited through its capture by those who don’t give two hoots about what it stands for, so long as they can use it to take down their supposed enemies.• Sonia Sodha is chief leader writer at the Observer and deputy opinion editor at the Guardian Share on Pinterest Shares147147 Share via Email John Bercow #MeToo movement Opinion The movement is at risk of discredit by the hypocrisy of those who won’t judge friends by the same standard as enemies Sexual harassment Since you’re here… Opinion Marina Hyde Share on Facebook If #MeToo is to work, we must call out the men we love Brett Kavanaugh There isn’t some utilitarian calculus that means abuse gets outranked by other considerations Share on Twitter Hillary Clinton Share on Messenger Reuse this content

P&G’s Marc Pritchard and Brand Leaders from Taco Bell and LEGO Take on the Future of Advertising, Platforms and Purpose at Wake up with the Economist MTS Staff WriterJune 20, 2019, 11:00 pmJune 20, 2019 EconomistJulia GoldinMarc PritchardMarketing TechnologyNewsP>aco Bell Previous ArticleHot Topics Recap: Cannes Lions 2019Next ArticleNow We Know the Truth: Going All-Digital with AI Is a Mistake “Advertising will not exist in the future”Mark Pritchard, Chief Brand Officer, P&G “Purpose isn’t just about interesting ads that have a point of view”Julia Goldin, Global Chief Marketing Officer, LEGO“Great value has purpose”Marisa Thalberg, Global Chief Brand Officer, Taco BellThe Economist Group (TEG) has returned to the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity with a programme of engaging debate and discussion led by The Economist journalists. In its third daily Wake Up With The Economist At Cannes Lions panel, Andrew Palmer, Executive editor, The Economist spoke with Marc Pritchard, Chief Brand Officer at P&G, Marisa Thalberg, Global Chief Brand Officer at Taco Bell and Julia Goldin, Global Chief Marketing Officer at LEGO.Discussing the future of traditional advertising, and the power of platforms and purpose, these three brand leaders offered fantastic insight into tough questions facing the industry- and we have compiled their responses below.Marketing Technology News: SessionM Demonstrates How to Turn Data into Loyalty at Salesforce ConnectionsThe future of traditional advertisingThe panel kicked off with Marc Pritchard provocatively arguing that “advertising will not exist in the future” and in order to survive against the age of ad blocking, it is necessary to “take the ad world and merge it with other creative worlds” to “reinvent advertising and engage people in a way that is useful and entertaining to a point where they look forward to the next engagement with the brand.” He suggested that brands will attempt to become more entertaining and part of stories that will bring what they do to life in an organic way.Julia Goldin then furthered the discussion by arguing that consumers will have more control over what they engage with which sets the bar very high for marketers and creatives, and only through the adoption of holistic engagement will advertisers begin to appease this control.Palmer then challenged the marketers on how this approach can get through the boardroom. Julia Goldin responded by arguing that it’s not a difficult conversation to have – as long as “marketers wake up to the fact that they have more tools than ever before to have these conversations.” Data can be an incredibly powerful tool to help make the case – but many make the mistake of “siloing people who understand data rather than saying we need to understand how to use data.” She argues that it boils down to the fact that if there is a bigger ROI if you invest in this type of activity vs another – “everyone understands that.”The power of the platforms When questioned on whether the digital platforms have too much power as part of the ecosystem, Julia Goldin pointed to the need for both platforms and the industry itself to take more responsibility. Saying“when you work with platforms separately – that isn’t to the advantage of the consumer or brands as you end up with a lot of repetitive messaging out there.” She expanded on the need for platforms to take responsibility to ensure the digital environment is safe for adults and kids.Marisa Thalberg said that as a business of scale, they need to partner with the largest platforms to connect with people who are there. She also spoke of their responsibility as a businesses of that size to hit the pause button literally and figuratively when needed. However, she also argued that we should have empathy as “the rate and size with which they have grown is unprecedented in history” bringing complex issues with them. Saying that she believed in the good intentions of the platforms but “at a certain point if it is not happening fast or thoroughly enough then as an ad community we need to say it’s not enough to say you’re trying.”Marc Pritchard, agreed on the need for shared responsibility saying, “are the platforms doing enough? none of us are doing enough” and said that he worried that by spending so much time talking about the platforms we were missing out on other important questions.Marketing Technology News: Actions, Not Words: The Economist Group Unveils Global Social Purpose Research at Cannes Lions International Festival of CreativityLooking towards purposeThe conversation then changed to address brand purpose, and how brands can be a source for good, to which Julia Goldin argued that “purpose isn’t just about interesting ads that have a point of view” but includes issues such as sustainability and digital safety. Marc Pritchard took a similar approach by saying that “businesses and brands have a great effect on culture and sustainability, so we have a responsibility to act in a way that is good for the economy”. Marisa Thalberg offered another argument around affordability by saying that “great value has purpose”, especially when it comes to caring for employees.Tomorrow’s ‘Wake Up with The Economist’ panel, also moderated by Andrew Palmer, Executive Editor, The Economist, includes the following world-class line-up:· Aline Santos Executive Vice President, Global Marketing and Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer, Unilever· Meg Farren, Chief Marketing Officer, KFC, UK & Ireland· Suzanne Kounkel, Chief Marketing officer, Deloitte, USMarketing Technology News: AUDIENCEX Continues Momentum with 300% Revenue Growth and Strategic Leadership Appointments
Leading global customers including Alaska Airlines, Starbucks, Gap Inc, Planet Fitness, Moët Hennessy USA, and Wynn Las Vegas now have a better, faster, smarter way to use data to serve their customersAmperity, the leading Customer Data Management platform, announced the next iteration of its best-in-class solution to help brands connect and use data to power customer 360 initiatives across their organizations. With this new release, companies will gain a truly comprehensive and actionable customer view, helping them put customers at the center of everything they do, with the goal of understanding, engaging, and providing personalized experiences.Through AI, the Amperity platform enables brands to unlock critical customer datasets that have historically been inaccessible and impossible to manage and unify, delivering a rich Customer 360 database complete with identities, attributes, and insights. Marketers, analysts, and customer experience specialists can then leverage their Customer 360 by directly building segments and delivering them downstream, or by using Amperity to hydrate any other tool with complete customer information. Amperity provides the highest quality customer views, improving marketing performance, fueling accurate insights, and unlocking new personalized customer experiences.Marketing Technology News: CoSchedule Launches Marketing Suite to Transform the Way Marketers WorkThis new release gives platform users greater confidence in the accuracy of their data and a richer understanding of their customers. Enhancements to the new Amperity platform include a more intelligent data unification engine, increased speed and scalability, greater control within the segmentation experience, new ways to ingest and deliver data downstream, and greater transparency and insights.“We built the platform to solve the chronic and pervasive data problem plaguing brands today,” said Chris Jones, Chief Product Officer of Amperity. “Companies have the building blocks for world-class customer experiences, but they fail to deliver because they lack true customer 360 views they can use across the business. To serve the customer, you can’t ignore key datasets or personalize in single channels. You need to bring together all your data — online and offline — and use it to understand and engage your customers as individuals, but effectively managing and unifying data from a variety of systems ends up being a Herculean task. We built Amperity to solve this problem in an entirely new way, leveraging AI and cloud infrastructure to turn data management on its head.”Building a Truly Comprehensive 360 Customer View Amperity is the only platform that allows brands to build a truly complete customer profile that’s fast and easy to implement, and flexible as systems and use cases change. The platform ingests data raw in its native format, eliminating the need for data prep or transformation before entering the system, accelerating speed to value.Leveraging Amperity’s proprietary AI-powered customer data engine, “Stitch” finds the hidden connections between records that would otherwise be impossible to resolve and unifies them at the individual level. The result is comprehensive 360 customer profiles that include identities, interactions, attributes, and transactions across point-of-sale, eCommerce, email, loyalty, mobile, and more — even when the source data is inconsistent and lacks linking keys across systems. The Amperity platform also introduces a new Customer 360 visualization solution that enables users to easily see and understand the details of their customer databases. This view showcases insights such as lifetime value, product affinity, loyalty status, and health metrics on the completeness of profile attributes across systems. This gives business stakeholders a richer understanding of the data they have available to them for segmentation and delivery downstream — a critical component to effectively using that data to serve the customer.Marketing Technology News: Broadvoice Welcomes Kim McLachlan as Senior Vice President of Sales and MarketingExecuting a Customer 360 StrategyAmperity is designed for speed to value, building on existing investments and scaling for the future. The platform easily connects to any existing technology and is flexible when those systems change. The new Amperity is optimized to give marketers, analysts, and customer experience specialists an easy yet powerful way to use data to serve their customers. New features include SQL shortcuts and an improved visual editor, putting customer profiles with current and predictive insights alongside transaction and interaction data, so users can build granular and effective segments. The platform also introduces a host of new integrations with downstream tools such as Snowflake, Azure, Microsoft Dynamics, Listrak, Facebook, Google Ads, as well as custom integrations with any existing systems.Jones continues, “Since we launched Amperity less than two years ago, we’ve secured some of the world’s leading consumer brands as customers including GAP Inc., Starbucks, TGI Fridays, Wynn Las Vegas, and Alaska Airlines, to name a few. We’re delivering a better, faster, and smarter Customer 360 experience for our customers so they can better serve theirs.”“We chose Amperity because the platform enables us to build a more comprehensive customer view than any other platform on the market,” said Michael Relich, COO at Lucky Brand. “This is the first step in building a holistic and actionable understanding of our customers, and the foundation for best-in-class personalization and customer experiences.”“With Amperity, Fridays is able to pull in data from point-of-sale systems, social media, credit card transactions and mobile devices, and analyze it to create personalized campaigns for the pool of more than 4 million guests who have given Fridays permission to contact them directly,” said Sherif Mityas, Chief Experience Officer, TGI Fridays. “Amperity then helps us stitch all of that disparate data together to power our world-class customer experiences.”Marketing Technology News: Constant Contact Unveils New WooCommerce and Shopify Offerings at 2019 Internet Retailer Conference Amperity Delivers a Truly Comprehensive 360 Customer View with Next-Generation Platform MTS Staff WriterJuly 1, 2019, 7:59 pmJuly 1, 2019 360 Customer ViewAmperitycustomer data managementMichael RelichNewsnext generation platform Previous ArticleContentsquare Acquires Clicktale to Create the Definitive Global Leader in Experience AnalyticsNext Article3 Reasons Your Programmatic Team Is Losing You Money

BJPbombgujarat-lok-sabha-elections-2019Lok Sabha elections 2019 First Published: April 17, 2019, 8:40 PM IST Surendranagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said he did not fall prey to Pakistan’s nuclear blackmail, because India has the “mother of nuclear bombs”.Addressing a campaign rally at Surendranagar in Gujarat, Modi was referring to the surgical strikes and air strikes conducted by the country’s forces inside Pakistan in response to terrorist attacks in Uri and Pulwama. “Earlier, terrorists from Pakistan would come here and go back after conducting an attack. Pakistan would threaten us, saying it has the nuclear bomb and will press the button (if India retaliated).”We have nuclear of nuclear bombs (the mother of nuclear bombs). I decided to tell them, do whatever you want to do (but we will retaliate),” the prime minister said.”In the past, our people would weep, go around the world saying Pakistan did this, did that….It is now Pakistan’s turn to weep.”Didn’t our jawans kill them by entering their houses? Shall we not kill them by entering their houses? Shall we not take revenge for our martyred soldiers?” he asked the large crowd which replied in the positive.”Today is Mahavir Jayanti, the day to observe peace. But when shall we have peace? Will anyone listen to a weak man making an appeal for peace or to the warning of a strong man who can flex his mussels? Only the peace appeal of a strong man will be respected, not that of a weak person,” Modi said.He also alleged that the Congress spoke ill of the armed forces.”You must have seen how the character of the Congress party has changed in this election. The way the Congress spreads lies, and questions the country’s military, saying its seniors are street goons, the Air Force chief is a liar…If you say something like this, will it not make Pakistan happy?” he said.In 2017, Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit likened Army Chief General Bipin Rawat to a “goon on the street” over the latter’s public remarks. He was forced to withdraw the remarks and apologise.Modi also slammed the Congress for seeking proof of action against terrorists.”When we conducted the surgical strike, Congress questioned us. When we conducted the air strike, it asked for proof. Do you (Congress) trust your own sons or Pakistan’s rhetoric?” the prime minister said.
bran starkdaenerys targaryenemilia clarkegame of thrones season 8 episode 6 First Published: May 20, 2019, 12:32 PM IST Warning: This article contains major spoilers. All good things must come to an end! After a series of gruesome deaths and brutal twist and turns that spanned nearly a decade from 2011 to 2019, Game of Thrones finally concluded with the final episode of its eight and last season airing Sunday night.Ever since the very first episode of this Season, fans have obsessed over who gets to rule Westeros. While many believed that Daenerys Targaryen, the unburnt mother of dragons, would eventually make it to the Iron Throne, others felt that Jon would be the one to sit on the throne, considering he is the most honourable and heroic character in the show. But as we all know, Game of Thrones has become known for shocking moments in each series. The show probably wouldn’t have been able to do justice to its reputation that it built over the years had Jon or Dany would get to be king or queen. So clearly, Bran remains to be one of the realistic candidates for the throne. Because Arya Stark never wanted to be a queen. Sansa Stark seems content to look after the people of North. Tyrion seems uninterested either. Rest were never really important in terms of “throne” plot. But obviously viewers were not prepared when Bran was declared the king of Westeros. The North, however, remained an independent state ruled by Sansa and “Bran the Broken” became king of the Six Kingdoms.Bran’s surprising appointment to sovereign has resulted into numerous memes and funny reactions on social media. Here are all the reactions to Bran’s ending in the Game of Thrones finale:me and the three other bran stans tonight pic.twitter.com/SkkyhRosXf— king bran supremacist (@aryasloki) May 19, 2019Bran Stark becomes king.♂️♂️Please someone explain to me the point of making Jon Snow Aegon Targaryen and bringing him back to life if he wasn’t going to become king. New Delhi: A dissent given by an election commissioner has to be noted in files and the complainant has a right to know whether the order passed by the Election Commission was unanimous, two former chief election commissioners have said. The statement comes amid the controversy surrounding dissent by one of the election commissioners in giving clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in at least three cases of poll code violation and one to BJP chief Amit Shah. “Whether a violation of the model code of conduct is found or not, the decision is usually communicated to the complainant by a secretary. But the communication should be clear that the decision was taken unanimously or by a majority,” said one of the former CECs.He said the dissent note need not be sent along the communication, but the complainant has a right to know who dissented. “Like in the case of the Supreme Court, the dissent should be uploaded on the EC website,” the other CEC said.He said dissent is part of internal deliberations and is part of a democratic system. “Had they decided on the complaints when they were received, the present situation would not have arisen,” said one of them. One of the election commissioners, according to sources, gave a dissenting view in the poll body’s decision to give a clean chit to Modi as regards his speech at Wardha on April 1, where he attacked Congress chief Rahul Gandhi for contesting from the minority-dominated Wayanad seat in Kerala, and his appeal to first-time voters by invoking the Balakot air strike and the CRPF jawans killed in the Pulwama terror attack in Latur on April 9.He had also reportedly given dissent in the clean chit to Shah for his Nagpur speech in which the BJP chief had reportedly said Wayanad constituency of Kerala is where majority is minority. The Election Commission (Conditions of Service of Election Commissioners and Transaction of Business) Act, 1991 states that if the chief election commissioner and other election commissioners differ in opinion on any matter, such matter shall be decided according to the opinion of the majority. The Commission transacts its business by holding regular meetings and also by circulation of papers. All election commissioners have equal say in the decision making of the poll panel.
