Rex Tillerson reaping whirlwind of Trumps disruptive Middle East policies

Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Turkey’s foreign minister, accused the US of bad faith and delivered an ultimatum: “Our relations are at a very critical point. Either we repair our relations or [they] will be broken altogether.” But the US military has told the Turks, in effect, to get lost. In an unusually frank admission, the state department says it expects Tillerson will have a “difficult conversation” in Ankara. History suggests the row will be patched up. But Erdoğan believes he has other options if the US alliance implodes. He is increasingly cooperating with the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s main backers, Iran and Russia.This collaboration has grave implications for Turkey’s place in Nato. Russia and the US are involved in a far wider, escalating struggle for control and influence in post-Isis Syria.Just how dangerous this is was shown when a Russian Su-25 fighter jet was shot down recently by Syrian rebels using a shoulder-held Manpad missile, allegedly supplied by the US. In addition, there are unconfirmed reports that several, and maybe dozens, of Russian nationals fighting alongside Syrian government troops were killed last week in clashes with US and US-backed forces. Russians, possibly mercenaries, are also said to have died in an American airstrike near Deir Ezzor, close to the Iraqi border.Further roiling the conflict, Iran is using Syrian territory as a launchpad for exerting military pressure on Israel, Washington’s close ally, as last weekend’s unprecedented aerial clashes demonstrated. Tillerson’s Middle East pilgrimage coincides with rising anti-American sentiment. In Turkey, a Center for American Progress poll this week showed 83% of Turks view the US unfavourably, and 46% believe Erdoğan should do more to confront Washington.Hostility to Trump’s policies bedevils Tillerson’s other visits this week. In Amman, he will try to placate Jordan’s government, a longtime ally, which is angry about US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and its cut in aid to the Palestinians. In Kuwait on Tuesday, Tillerson faced the damaging consequences of Trump’s close embrace of Saudi Arabia, whose bitter dispute with Qatar – home to a vital US military base – has jeopardised western security interests and poisoned Gulf relations. None of this helps advance Tillerson’s stated aims: stabilising the region and finishing off Isis. Tillerson’s first stop – a visit to Egypt on Monday – inadvertently highlighted another controversy: Trump’s failure to maintain traditional US advocacy for democracy and human rights. Congratulating his hosts on counter-terrorism operations in Sinai, Tillerson made no mention of next month’s rigged presidential poll, when Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, whom Trump calls a “fantastic guy”, will be re-elected. All credible challengers have been disqualified or locked up. As a former high-flying Exxon-Mobil chief executive, Rex Tillerson is unaccustomed to groveling.But the US secretary of state may have no choice during a five-country mission to try and soothe tempers and repair damage across the Middle East after a year of Donald Trump shenanigans.America’s top diplomat is reaping the whirlwind of 12 months of disruptive, divisive policies and what critics say is Trump’s lack of strategic vision for a troubled region vital for western interests.Nobody is angrier than Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey’s choleric president. If MeToo is to work we must call out the men we

In recent months, it’s become clear that people who are no allies of #MeToo are all too keen to marshal it for their own ends. We’ve seen that happening in the US, where alt-right bloggers have pledged to use it to bring down liberal opponents of Trump. And we’ve seen it here, where John Bercow’s longstanding critics have used serious (and as yet uninvestigated) allegations of bullying against him and findings that the House of Commons – of which he is chief officer – has a toxic culture of bullying and harassment to call for his resignation.In theory, there’s no problem. Who cares what’s motivating someone else? Judge each case on its merits. But it matters psychologically: the bandwagon-jumping morphs the debate so it’s no longer about what happened to the alleged victims but about something else altogether. It pushes people into ignoring the transgressions of their allies out of distaste at the prospect of lining up alongside their foes.That way lies hypocrisy. And if by any chance you think it is limited to one side – Republican senator Susan Collins casting her swing vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the supreme court after delivering an impassioned speech on why #MeToo is long overdue – think again. Two weeks ago, Hillary Clinton – she of the “I’m with her” slogan – was questioned on whether her husband should have stood down over his affair with Monica Lewinsky. No one was expecting a yes. But this self-professed feminist, the first major-party female candidate for US president, couldn’t even rouse a “no comment”. Instead she defended the indefensible, perpetuating the myth that it’s OK for the most powerful man in the world to accept oral sex from his intern in the Oval Office, because it was “consensual”.It would be unfair to single out Clinton. The Labour party – the clue’s in the name: it’s there to champion workers – has utterly failed to hold Bercow to account for his leadership of the Commons. A Labour MP, Kate Green, cast the deciding vote to block an investigation into the allegations that he subjected some of his staff to severe bullying, leaving one suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder – accusations that he denies. In a recent Commons debate about bullying and harassment in parliament, Labour MPs had the gall to accuse Bercow’s critics of bullying him. And what a great takeaway for abusers this was, from the veteran Labour campaigner Margaret Beckett. In defending Bercow’s position, she said “abuse is terrible”, but that Brexit “trumps bad behaviour”. comment Share on Twitter Read more Topics Share via Email A year on, there’s already a depressing familiarity to the #MeToo cycle. First comes the revelation. Then days of salacious headlines. Then the moment of reckoning: a powerful man either loses his job. Or he doesn’t. And on we go until it all happens again. When #MeToo first exploded, I shared the optimism about its capacity to create change: not just for the victims of the rich and famous, but also for those whose transgressions are never going to be newsworthy. Today I’m much warier.It’s undoubtedly satisfying seeing some big cheeses get their richly deserved comeuppance, but it has its limits. Sometimes a genuine expression of remorse and a promise to do better might be preferable. And the very thing that has made #MeToo impactful – its short-circuiting of the due process that has failed women for decades – was only ever going to work against a handful of predators, in part because the more revelations that emerge, the more they lose their capacity to shock. You can’t (rightly) pooh-pooh Brett Kavanaugh for wheeling out irrelevant character witnesses (would-be rapists aren’t necessarily awful to all the women in their lives) and then proclaim: “But John Bercow’s been such a great reformer!” There isn’t some utilitarian calculus that means abuse gets outranked by other considerations. And it’s wrong to call out the hypocrisy of others without confronting your own cognitive dissonance about friends who may also be bullies and harassers.So long as we judge the predators we like differently, we’re all, to some extent, complicit. Only when people feel able to call out those they like and love will we see progress. If not, we’ll at best be stuck in a holding pattern of revelation then resignation for years to come. In its third daily Wake Up With The Economist At Cannes Lions panel, Andrew Palmer, Executive editor, The Economist spoke with Marc Pritchard, Chief Brand Officer at P&G, Marisa Thalberg, Global Chief Brand Officer at Taco Bell and Julia Goldin, Global Chief Marketing Officer at LEGO.Discussing the future of traditional advertising, and the power of platforms and purpose, these three brand leaders offered fantastic insight into tough questions facing the industry- and we have compiled their responses below.Marketing Technology News: SessionM Demonstrates How to Turn Data into Loyalty at Salesforce ConnectionsThe future of traditional advertisingThe panel kicked off with Marc Pritchard provocatively arguing that “advertising will not exist in the future” and in order to survive against the age of ad blocking, it is necessary to “take the ad world and merge it with other creative worlds” to “reinvent advertising and engage people in a way that is useful and entertaining to a point where they look forward to the next engagement with the brand.” He suggested that brands will attempt to become more entertaining and part of stories that will bring what they do to life in an organic way.Julia Goldin then furthered the discussion by arguing that consumers will have more control over what they engage with which sets the bar very high for marketers and creatives, and only through the adoption of holistic engagement will advertisers begin to appease this control.Palmer then challenged the marketers on how this approach can get through the boardroom. Julia Goldin responded by arguing that it’s not a difficult conversation to have – as long as “marketers wake up to the fact that they have more tools than ever before to have these conversations.” Data can be an incredibly powerful tool to help make the case – but many make the mistake of “siloing people who understand data rather than saying we need to understand how to use data.”  She argues that it boils down to the fact that if there is a bigger ROI if you invest in this type of activity vs another – “everyone understands that.”The power of the platforms  When questioned on whether the digital platforms have too much power as part of the ecosystem, Julia Goldin pointed to the need for both platforms and the industry itself to take more responsibility. Saying“when you work with platforms separately – that isn’t to the advantage of the consumer or brands as you end up with a lot of repetitive messaging out there.” She expanded on the need for platforms to take responsibility to ensure the digital environment is safe for adults and kids.Marisa Thalberg said that as a business of scale, they need to partner with the largest platforms to connect with people who are there. She also spoke of their responsibility as a businesses of that size to hit the pause button literally and figuratively when needed. However, she also  argued that we should have  empathy as “the rate and size with which they have grown is unprecedented in history” bringing complex issues with them. Complainant Has Right to Know About Dissent in Decisions Say Two Former

first_imgNew Delhi: A dissent given by an election commissioner has to be noted in files and the complainant has a right to know whether the order passed by the Election Commission was unanimous, two former chief election commissioners have said. The statement comes amid the controversy surrounding dissent by one of the election commissioners in giving clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in at least three cases of poll code violation and one to BJP chief Amit Shah. “Whether a violation of the model code of conduct is found or not, the decision is usually communicated to the complainant by a secretary. But the communication should be clear that the decision was taken unanimously or by a majority,” said one of the former CECs.He said the dissent note need not be sent along the communication, but the complainant has a right to know who dissented. “Like in the case of the Supreme Court, the dissent should be uploaded on the EC website,” the other CEC said.He said dissent is part of internal deliberations and is part of a democratic system. “Had they decided on the complaints when they were received, the present situation would not have arisen,” said one of them.One of the election commissioners, according to sources, gave a dissenting view in the poll body’s decision to give a clean chit to Modi as regards his speech at Wardha on April 1, where he attacked Congress chief Rahul Gandhi for contesting from the minority-dominated Wayanad seat in Kerala, and his appeal to first-time voters by invoking the Balakot air strike and the CRPF jawans killed in the Pulwama terror attack in Latur on April 9.He had also reportedly given dissent in the clean chit to Shah for his Nagpur speech in which the BJP chief had reportedly said Wayanad constituency of Kerala is where majority is minority.The Election Commission (Conditions of Service of Election Commissioners and Transaction of Business) Act, 1991 states that if the chief election commissioner and other election commissioners differ in opinion on any matter, such matter shall be decided according to the opinion of the majority. The BJP held two such processions during the day at Raiganj and Kaliyaganj in the district, the permission for which was denied by the administration, police said.State BJP president Dilip Ghosh, who was a part of the rallies along with Union minister Debasree Chaudhuri, however, asserted that the party will “continue to hold victory rallies in the state despite the prohibition”.Chaudhuri had won the Raiganj Lok Sabha seat on a BJP ticket.
